Based on current evidence, we recommend individuals consume between 1.6-3.1 grams of protein per kilo bodyweight per day. This works out to be 0.3-0.5 grams of protein per kilo bodyweight per meal. • The higher end of this range is reserved for individuals who are losing weight, have very lower levels of body fat, utilize high volumes of strenuous exercise, or who have some condition that increases anabolic resistance. Conversely, the lower end of this range is suitable for individuals who are gaining or maintaining weight and have higher levels of body fat. • The source of protein, e.g. animal or plant, matters little at this level of protein intake, as there are a substantial amount of essential amino acids (EAAs) being consumed in each meal, which subsequently results in a muscle protein synthesis response. The EAA and leucine content are thought to be principally responsible for driving the muscle protein synthesis response to a meal. • For example, 25g of whey protein contains about 2.7g of leucine and 10.9g of EAAs, which has been shown to drive a muscle protein synthesis response. Conversely, nearly 40g of rice protein or 105g of hemp protein powder would need to be consumed in order to get this same amount of leucine and EAAs to generate a muscle protein synthesis response. • One knock against plant has to do with overall quality when compared to animal proteins. The quality and digestibility of the protein is reflected by the Protein Digestibility-Corrected Amino Acid Score (PDCAAS), which plots protein quality on a scale ranging from 0-1 with 1 being the highest quality and 0 being the lowest. • The PDCAAs of whey and pea protein are 1.0 and 0.893, respectively- which are pretty close! However, the EAA and leucine content of pea protein are much lower than whey which may compromise the muscle protein synthesis response generated from a serving of pea protein. To combat this, we increased the EAA and leucine content of our Vegan Rx to match that of our Whey Rx. • For someone needing a protein supplement that’s not made from whey, our Vegan Rx is a great choice. Hammiezzz 🥴 Dis was a few accessory moves from last weeks hamstring focused (knee friendly) workout. Coincidentally I’m sitting here finishing my hammie day right now for this week! Today was weird, I had to split my workout up into 3 different little sets throughout the day. I run a really tight schedule and sometimes it’s impossible for me to get a straight hour gym sesh in at one time. Time to me isn’t an excuse tho, so the 30 minutes I had between clients I deadlifted & hit a set of hammies. Then the next 15 min break I had I hit two more sets and now my last break I’m finishing up before my evening clients. Ayeeee got it done, that’s all that counts 🤪 Did you get your exercise in today?!
